Indonesia’s recovery experience from the May 27, 2006 Earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale that caused extensive damage to Yogyakarta and Central Java, can be considered as one of most successful cases within Southeast Asia. For three years now, the recovery process has been proceeding smoothly due to well-coordinated efforts of various actors, including sincere ommitments from both national and local governments, mutual help among local communities, and generous contributions from international organizations and donors.
Based on the recovery experiences from the Yogyakarta Earthquake, The Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) in close collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Planning, GMU (Gadjah Mada University), will hold the International Recovery Platform Regional Workshop in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for sharing these lessons among other countries in Southeast Asia offers an added value on achieving effective recovery operations in the region. This regional workshop provides opportunity for policymakers, practitioners, and academe to get together and exchange experience from recovery operations as well as discuss and agree on priorities in addressing gaps in recovery practices and resources that are unique in the region.
