The MMI-CSIRO Materials Science PhD Scholarship Program is a newly established research initiative between the Melbourne Materials Institute (MMI) of the University of Melbourne and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to support outstanding prospective PhD candidates in the areas of materials science including physics, chemistry, chemical and bimolecular engineering, mechanical engineering, microbiology, medicine, dentistry, immunology and other related fields.
Conditions
Open to both Australian and international students who will enrol or are enrolled in PhD program at the University of Melbourne in the interdisciplinary field of materials science.
Benefits
Each PhD scholarship includes a generous tax free living stipend valued at AUD 30,000 per annum and fee remission scholarship for international candidates. Recipients of UoM graduate research scholarships (e.g. APA, MRS, IPRS, MIRS/MIFRS, FMS) may receive a top-up to the total sum of $30,000 per annum.
Eligibility criteria
Open to both local (Australian citizens and permanent residents) and international students. Successful applicants will be required to satisfy the entry requirements for a PhD at the University of Melbourne. The key academic requirements that applicants must meet are (i) completion of tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a four-year honours degree at an Australian university, and (ii) completion of a research project/component as part of their tertiary studies that accounts for at least 25% of their year’s work at 4th year or Masters level. Recipients of this prestigious scholarship program are expected to hold a first class honours degree or GPA above 3.6 or equivalent.
Application process
Interested applicants are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI). It should include:
• CV/Resume under the following headings
o Full Name
o Address, telephone and email contact
o Citizenship and residency status
o Full details of education and training
o Details of awards and prizes
o Details of any published works
o Any other relevant information such as previous research experience, teaching and supervision experience, details of any research grant support
• Copies of academic record and transcript (NB: A first class honours degree or GPA above 3.6 or equivalent is required. Certified copy of the academic transcript is not required at this stage. Please only send the grade of your Honours year (final year) and/or Masters. Please do not send your high school scores).
• Statement of areas of research interest and motivation for wishing to undertake a PhD degree (limit to one page).

Please name your file under one of the following formats:
• If you are an international applicant: MCSP_I_ surname_firstnameinitial
• If you are an Australian resident: MCSP_A_ surname_firstnameinitial
For example:
Jane Lee is an international applicant. She names her PDF file as: MCSP_I_Lee_J.
There is no need at the EOI stage to identify a research project or supervisor. Selected candidates will be contacted and assisted in their application for admission to the PhD program at the University of Melbourne.
Please make sure you have all the necessary items and merge them in one single PDF file before sending it to us.
Do not attach other items such as health certificate or non-requested document.
Please note that applications with missing items will NOT be processed.
Closing date
Applicants should submit their EOI as soon as possible. It should be submitted by 4pm(EST), Friday, 29th July, 2011 at the latest for consideration in the 2011-2012 round, but the scholarships will remain open until filled. Selected candidates to proceed to full application will be notified by the end of August 2011.
