Kyushu University’s tradition dates back to 1911, when it was founded as one of Japan’s seven imperial universities. There are now 11 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate schools, 3 research institutes and a hospital. The total number of students currently amounts to 19,420 while the faculty members number 2,216. 1995 international students from more than 80 countries are studying at Kyushu University.
Kyushu University is located in Fukuoka, a pleasant coastal city of 1.4 million people and the largest metropolis on the island of Kyushu. Thanks to its favorable location close to China and Korea, the city of Fukuoka has prospered as Japan’s gateway to continental Asia from ancient times. Being aware of the precious history and favorable location of Fukuoka, Kyushu University is increasingly focusing on Asia and its role in the world.
Kyushu University Summer Program was launched in 2001 and re-named “Asia in Today’s World” in 2003. Since its establishment, the program has been offering undergraduate level courses about the past, present and future of Asia and Japan. Each year, ATW hosted 50~60 participants from universities in Asia, Europe, North America and South America.
